The ‘Checklist of Birds of the Katherine Region’ was compiled by the author over a 28 year period. It includes most of the species with inland distributions which visitors want to see.

Sites at which these birds may be observed are all within a 200 kilometre drive (up to 2 hours travel) from Katherine, ranging from the Victoria River crossing 192 kilometres to the southwest; 198 kilometres north to Gunlom (Waterfall Creek) in the southern part of Kakadu National Park;  and Mataranka 102 Kilometres to the southeast.

Specific locations are provided for some species.

The status and notes, although brief, are intended to assist in planning a visit to the region and aid observations in the field.

The order of birds in the checklist conforms with "The Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds".
